Printed materials would also be useful if lacking in real objects ( these and these printed initial sound cards are suitable and good for gathering ideas).

Lego (we have used a lego astronaut, bear, bike, bone, cup, dog and hat). Here are some of the items I found that were small and suitable From around our home I looked for everyday items and through the children's materials and toys. It would have been easy to hand write each letter on a small piece of paper or print out each letter. I put one letter from our movable alphabet in each of the sections. So without spending a cent more I collected items from around our home for each letter. Our boxes are 31 x 20 cms and the sections are a good size to hold miniatures. I also thought that I could easily use these containers later (for storing materials, sewing supplies etc). There are 24 sections in total and I am fine with not having an X or Z. I used two of these sectional boxes which were only $5 each from our local hardware store. However when I went to buy a suitable box with drawers I could see that I could make an alphabet box for substantially less.

I really love this example at Wildflower Ramblings and wanted to make something similar. For a while I had been thinking about making an Alphabet Box for Otis.
